About Me

Hello, I'm Jake Wamala and I'm the founder of JW Chess Academy. A year and a half after moving to the Bay Area, I was in between jobs and realized I had the opportunity to do something I always wanted to do: teach chess. Here are a few quick facts on me:
  • Certified USCF Chess Expert
  • Former youth chess champion (former State Champion and Ranked #16 in the country for age group)
  • MIT grad, BerkeleyHaas student and local Oakland resident

About JW Chess Academy

JW Chess Academy meets weekly in various areas of the Oakland. The objective of the Academy is to teach chess to new beginners to the game or children who have recently started playing. We focus on keeping the ratio of instructors to students low in order to have as much individual attention as possible. The program also makes use of the many chess events hosted by Oakland Public Libraries, including Dimond, Cesar Chavez, and Lakeview (on Lake Merritt).
